Volunteer as a Guardianship Advocate

Guardianship Volunteer Advocates are individuals who believe strongly in, and have the time for, advocating for the rights of the elderly.

At times, REAL Services becomes the legal guardian for older adults that do not have appropriate family support. Become a friend and advocate for one of these adults by visiting them regularly and helping them navigate end-of-life decisions.  The GVA program is available in St. Joseph, Elkhart, Kosciusko, and Marshall Counties.

Due to the intensity of the Guardianship program, volunteers must be 21 years of age or older to participate.

Training: This program requires approximately 15-20 hours of training that take place with a trained mentor over a three month time period. Ongoing training and support is provided.

Match: After training, you will be matched with a REAL Services Guardianship client that lives in a nursing facility.

Commitment: A one-year commitment to the program is requested. GVAs are expected to visit their client at least 4 hours per month, with a minimum of two visits.

Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance.
