The following programs are available in Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall and St. Joseph counties in Indiana.
Living a Healthy Life Workshop Leader: Lead with a co-leader. These workshops are designed for older adults who are living with one or more chronic conditions, their caregivers or family members. The program provides participants with the tools to better manage their conditions and live a healthier life. Workshops are 1 time per week for 6 weeks, for a maximum of 2.5 hours each time. Potential leaders must attend 4 days of training, 2 days one week and 2 days the following week, 6 hours each day. Potential leaders must attend all 4 days of training and co-lead 1 workshop as a trainee to become certified. Potential leaders must also be available at least 2 times during the year to lead workshops and maintain their certification. Potential leaders must be dependable during workshops.
Matter of Balance Program Leader: Lead with a co-leader. These workshops are intended for older adults who either have a history of falling or are afraid they may fall. The program provides participants with a combination of skills learned through both the workshop format and gentle exercises designed to reduce the fear of falling, and increase their activity levels. Workshops are 1 time per week for 8 weeks for a maximum of 2.0 hours each time (they can be done 2 times per week for 4 weeks if requested). Potential leaders must attend 2 consecutive days of training, 4 hours each day. Potential leaders must attend both days of training and co-lead 1 workshop as a trainee to become certified. Potential leaders must be dependable during workshops.
Walk With Ease Program Leader: Lead a walking class. These classes are designed for older adults who both do and do not have arthritis. Through short discussion, stretching, and group walking, the program provides the participants an opportunity to take the steps necessary to ease back into exercising and/or develop a routine. The classes stress that walking can be a social and fun way to increase physical activity, flexibility and strength. Classes are 3 times per week for 6 weeks, for a maximum of 1.5 hours each time, once the walking times build up (the initial class duration may be approximately 45 minutes). All potential leaders must be CPR certified and First Aid certification is strongly recommended. Once certification is received, potential leaders must successfully complete the on-line Arthritis Foundation Walk with Ease Program Leader training. Potential leaders must be dependable during classes.
